Bavaria - The Alttrauchburg

Posted by on 20 mt February 2011

The ruins of Alttrauchburg is one of the best preserved castles of the Allgäu. It lies above the small hamlet of Weitnauer community in the county in Swabia Upper Allgäu. From the high-to post-medieval castle still remain large wall remains.

The hilltop castle probably dates back to a previous system and the Earl of Veringen Nellenburg. These festivals will appear for the first time 1041 in the ancient sources.

Around 1150, a branch of the lords of Rettenberg invested with the government and called himself "from Trauchburg". Beginning of the 13th Century moved Berthold Trauchburg of the castle to its present site and established a feast house or a residential tower. Already in 1258, the feud passed to the Steward of Waldburg, who could purchase the debt of the reign in 1306 counts. The tower-like core structure has now been expanded and built upon. In the south, the large outer bailey was built with the advanced high square tower.

During the Peasants' War, the Trauchburg was sacked in 1525 and damaged. In 1546 the troops occupied the castle of the Smalcald League. For these reasons, we put in the 16 Century, a kennel at the core of the castle, which was reinforced by artillery roundels. The attachment of the outer bailey is enhanced on this occasion.

1628 were able to acquire the Imperial Count Waldburger title in 1690 and settled on her castle after Kißlegg. From 1729, we used the empty Trauchburg as a quarry for the new palace in Kißlegg. Other parts were canceled for the 1784-1788 construction of the castle at New Trauchburg Isny.

1772 died in the line of the Jacobin Waldburger with Count Franz Karl Eusebius. The inheritance went to the line of the Counts of Waldburg-Zeil. Even today, the castle has been owned by this family.

Posted by mt at 31 October 2010

St. Peter's in Rome, in the German-speaking countries generally St. Peter called (also: Basilica of St. Peter, St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican Basilica, Italian: San Pietro in Vaticano, Latin: Sancti Petri in Vaticano or Templum Vatican), is the largest of the major basilicas in Rome and the center of the independent State of Vatican City.

The church is dedicated to the apostle Simon Peter, on whose grave suspected it was built. Already around the year 324, Constantine the Great built a church at this point (Old St. Peter). Foundation stone laid for the present building was 18 April 1506th

The inner surface of 211.5 m and 132.5 m tall building is approximately 15 160 square meters and offers approximately 20,000 square. Thus, the St. Peter's is not only one of the largest church building in the world, but he even has one of the largest interiors in the world. The nave has a length of 187 m and a width of 27.50 m, the transept is 138 feet wide. It took about 120 years.

The double dome of St. Peter's Basilica is the largest cantilevered brick building in the world. It has a diameter of 42.34 meters (86 inches less than the Pantheon, but is higher with 43,20 m) and is supported by four five columns with a diameter of 24 m. The inner dome frieze is available in two-meter-high letters, the quotation from the Gospel of Matthew: Tu es Petrus, et super Hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum (You are Peter [Latinized petros of Greek πετρος: the rock], and this rock I will build my church, and I give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven.) The lantern of the dome is to reach over 510 levels. The first 190 steps to the roof terrace can be overcome with a lift.

From the lantern is a superb panoramic view of the Vatican Hill, St. Peter's Square and surrounding Rome.

London - View from Saint Paul's Cathedral

Posted by on 21 mt September 2010

The Saint Paul's Cathedral in London is one of the largest cathedrals in the world. It is located in the municipality City of London, about 300 meters north of the Thames and is the seat of the diocese of London. In addition to the Westminster Abbey it is also regarded as the most famous church in the British capital.

As early as the 7th Century was a church at that position. The former wooden building was destroyed by fire several times and built a total of five times again. The Normans began around 1087 with the construction of a cathedral, which was one of its completion in 1314 of the longest and tallest buildings in the Middle Ages. At the moment of Henry VIII began a decline of the church building. When a lightning strike in 1561 and 1666 one of the towers of the entire building in the Great Fire of London was destroyed completely.

London at that time probably the most important architect, Sir Christopher Wren designed, among many other buildings, the new St. Paul's Cathedral. His model was the " St. Peter's Basilica in Rome , "from which the great similarity of the two buildings resulted. His original design was rejected as too radical and too expensive. Only in 1675 a much leaner plan was adopted. During the 40-year construction plan, numerous changes are made so that the beginning of the 18th Century cathedral is like finally accomplished more than the original draft of the version of 1675.

The cathedral has a cruciform base, which is aligned east-west direction. In the middle of this cross is a dome, which is located on a 750-ton lantern, which ends in 111 meters. 111 m correspond to 365 feet high, one foot for each day of the year.

The dome is the second largest church dome in the world (after the " Peter's Basilica in Rome "). Inside, about 30 meters there is a gallery with about 34 meters in diameter. The "whispering gallery" is famous for being influenced by reflections of sound, which is caused by the curvature of the dome every whispered word on the opposite side of the gallery heard.

Who the 426 steps of the ascent of the dome is not afraid (143 steps to the "whispering gallery" + 117 steps to the "Stone Gallery" + 166 steps to the "Golden Gallery"), can be an impressive view over the rooftops of London . forward Who does not want to ascend themselves, can view the panorama here.
