London - View from Saint Paul's Cathedral

Posted by mt on 21 September 2010

The Saint Paul's Cathedral in London is one of the largest cathedrals in the world. It is located in the municipality City of London, about 300 m north of the Thames and is the seat of the diocese of London. In addition to the Westminster Abbey it is also regarded as the most famous church in the British capital.

As early as the 7th Century was in this position a church. The former wooden building was destroyed by fire several times and built a total of five times again. The Normans began around 1087 with the construction of a cathedral, which was one of its completion in 1314 of the longest and tallest buildings in the Middle Ages. Currently, Henry VIII began a decline of the church building. When a lightning strike in 1561 and 1666 one of the towers of the entire building in the Great Fire of London was destroyed completely.

London at that time probably the most important architect, Sir Christopher Wren designed, among many other buildings and the new St. Paul's Cathedral. His model was the " St. Peter's Basilica in Rome , "from which the great similarity of the two buildings resulted. His original design was rejected as too radical and too expensive. Only in 1675 a much leaner plan was adopted. During the 40-year construction plan have been many changes made so that the beginning of the 18th Century cathedral is like finally accomplished more than the original draft version of the 1675th

The cathedral has a cruciform base, which is aligned east-west direction. In the middle of this cross, there is a dome, which is located on a 750-ton lantern, which ends at 111 m altitude. 111 m correspond to 365 feet high, one foot for each day of the year.

The dome is the second largest church dome in the world (after the " St. Peter's Basilica in Rome "). Inside, about 30 meters in height is a gallery with about 34 meters in diameter. These "Whispering Gallery" is famous for the fact that reflections of the sound, which are caused by the curvature of the dome, every whispered word on the opposite side of the gallery heard.

Who the 426 steps of the ascent of the dome is not afraid (143 steps to the "whispering gallery" + 117 steps to the "Stone Gallery" + 166 steps to the "Golden Gallery"), can have a stunning view over the rooftops of London . glad Who does not want to ascend themselves, can view the panorama here.
